Journalists Commend Government, Calls for Vigilance

The Plateau State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting good governance, security, and the well-being of citizens.

In a communiqué issued at the end of its recent congress held at the NUJ Secretariat in Jos, the union called on the state government to address critical security challenges, particularly the killings and widespread destruction of lives and property in certain communities.

Presided over by the council chairman, Ayuku Pwaspo, the congress praised the government for its prompt response to security issues in some areas but emphasized the need for increased vigilance.

The communiqué expressed concern that the ongoing security challenges could lead to food insecurity and urged security agencies to intensify efforts to protect farmers during the upcoming farming season.

The union also called on government agencies, particularly SEMA and NEMA, to coordinate the supply of relief materials to displaced persons.

Similarly, the Union members expressed support for the notion that communities should defend themselves within the bounds of the law.

The communiqué expressed deep concern over the fire incident at the terminus market, extending sympathy to the affected traders, and urged the state government, groups, and well-meaning individuals to assist the over 500 traders whose shops and property were destroyed in the blaze.

They also called on both federal and state governments to equip fire service departments with functional firefighting vehicles to ensure swift responses to fire outbreaks.

The council raised concerns about the persistent water scarcity affecting both rural and urban communities in the state and urged the government to prioritize access to potable water to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.

While commending the government’s efforts in combating child trafficking, the council urged parents to refrain from allowing their children to be involved in such illegal activities.

It also appealed to religious and traditional leaders to join the fight against child trafficking.

The union acknowledged the work of the Plateau State Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA) in clearing drains to prevent flooding as the rainy season approaches.

It however, encouraged residents to reciprocate these efforts by no longer disposing of refuse in waterways and reminded them to safeguard their homes and vehicles, especially in light of increasing criminal activities.

The council congratulated the president of the NUJ, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, and all members on the union’s 70th anniversary celebration.

It urged journalists to uphold professionalism in their reporting to protect the integrity of the union.

Highpoint of the congress, was the formal inauguration of a new chapel with a call on the new members to adhere to the ethics of journalism in reporting and conduct.
