LG POLLS: PLASIEC REVISES TIMETABLE

In line with its mandate and in compliance with the provisions of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission Law, 2024 and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and Electoral Act, 2022, the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has announced that Local Government Council polls will be conducted in the Seventeen (17) LGCs of Plateau State on Wednesday, 9th September, 2026.
Addressing newsmen at the PLASIEC headquarters in Jos, Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Plangji Daniel Cishak said, “Pursuant to section 19 (2) of PLASIEC Law 2024, election into the said offices shall be held not later than thirty (30) days before the expiration of the term of office of the last holder of that office.
“The latest date for the conduct of elections in the Local Government Councils in Plateau State is 9th September, 2026.”
The Chairman added that the Commission is empowered by Section 33(1) of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission Law to issue a Notice of the election not later than Three Hundred and Sixty (360) days before the date of the elections.

He said, “In exercise of the powers conferred on the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (hereinafter referred to as “the Commission”) by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission Law 2024 and all powers enabling it in that behalf, the Commission hereby issues this Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2026 Local Government Elections in Plateau State.”
He also announced that the conduct of Party Primaries, including resolution of disputes arising from the Primaries which were earlier scheduled for January 2026, will now be held in March, 2026.
The PLASIEC Chairman further announced that the new date for the collection of Nomination Forms for Candidates by Political Parties is from March 13, 2026, to Tuesday, 17th March 17, 2026, instead of the February date stated.
He explained that the date for the submission of Nomination Forms for candidates by Political Parties will be on March 18 to 19, 2026.
On the reviewed date for Publication of Personal Particulars of Candidates by the Commission, the Chairman gave March 21 as the new date.
The PLASIEC Chairman announced that the verification and screening of chairmanship candidates, their running mates, and councillorship candidates will take place from 23 to 28 March 2026, while the publication of the list of qualified/cleared candidates will take place on March 30, 2026.
Mr Cishak also said that receipt of appeal cases by the Commission will be on March 31, while the hearing of these appeals takes place on April 1, 2026.
He maintained that the publication of the final list of nominated candidates will be on April 9, 2026.
According to the revised schedule of activities, political party campaigns would commence on April 11 and end on Monday, September 7, while the election will be on Wednesday 9th September, 2026, from 8am to 3pm.
