Plateau Attacks: Berom Youths Call for Vigilance Against Fulani Militias

The Berom Youths Moulders Association (BYM) has urged its members across the state to rise and defend themselves against the Fulani herdsmen attacking their communities.

Addressing journalists in Jos, the Plateau State capital, the President of  BYM, Barr. Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri said, “Enough is enough.”

The BYM leader stated that the Association would no longer stand by and watch what he described as “enemies of humanity slaughter their people without any consequences.”

Mwantiri said, “The Berom Youths Moulders Association calls on its compatriots to remain vigilant and be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice in defence of their God-given lands and heritage.”

He added that it should be clear to all that the Berom nation, and indeed Plateau State, shall never surrender to terror, nor will their lands be forfeited to invaders.

On the recent killings in Bindi/Jebbu of Riyom LGA, where 27 people were massacred and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed, Mwantiri maintained that this disturbing campaign has become a topic of political commentary, deliberately structured to serve the interests and ethnic egos of those behind it.

He, however, cautioned that if measures were not implemented, the reign of terror in Plateau, characterised by a pattern of assaults, would continue to displace and occupy native communities.

Barr. Mwantiri disclosed that the BYM was demanding the establishment of an independent panel to investigate the individuals or groups involved in or sponsoring the attacks in all communities of Plateau State to ensure they face the full force of the law.

He accused the Commander of Sector 6 in the region, Lt. Col. Thomas Paave, of compromise and complacency in addressing security challenges.

According to him, the youth are perplexed by the commander’s statement claiming that his men were overwhelmed to the extent that none of the attackers were apprehended, wounded, or neutralised during the Bindi/Jebbu attack.

Barr. Mwantiri further called on the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction to extend its humanitarian assistance to the families of the deceased victims, including those injured, the displaced and other villages that have suffered crop destruction in the state.

On the arrest of some BYM members by the Special Task Force (STF), Barr. Mwantiri demanded their “unconditional release,” stating that the youths were indiscriminately detained in the villages of Sagas, Gyembus, Jol, Gwom, and other areas in violation of their constitutional rights.

The group commended President Tinubu and Governor Mutfwang for their efforts towards curbing the attacks.

The BYM also applauded the Hon. Minister of Humanitarian Affairs for their commitment towards addressing the humanitarian crises in the affected communities.
