PLATEAU STATE VARSITY TO COMMENCE 19 NEW COURSES

Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, is set to begin 19 new courses from the 2026/2027 academic session.
Information from the institution indicates that the Directorate of Academic Planning has requested the Senate of the institution to approve the establishment and commencement of twenty new undergraduate degree programmes.
According to Prof. Buba Wufem, Director of Academic Planning at PLASU, the proposal is driven by the significant increase in the number of qualified candidates seeking admission into the state-owned institution, and the Management’s concerted efforts to meet the diverse educational needs of the people.
Prof. Wufem added that these programmes, which are expected to commence with the beginning of the 2026/2027 Academic session, are subject to successful resource verification by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The proposed new degree programmes are in the fields of Computer Science, Information and Communication Technology, Cybersecurity, and Data Science, all in the Faculty of Computing.
Other new courses to be run at the Bachelor of Science Degree level include Broadcasting, Mass Communication, Digital and Strategic Communication, Journalism, and Media Studies in the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies.
Others are Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Studies and Civic Education, Early Childhood Education, Economics, Education Management and Guidance, and Counselling.
In the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, the new courses include the Bachelor of Science Quantity Survey, while in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, B.Rad. Radiography, DPT. Physiotherapy, D.D. Optometry, Bachelor of Science, Nutrition and Dietetics.
Similarly, the PLASU Senate has approved January 2026 as the new date for the 8th and 9th combined convocation of the university.
The decision was made during the 97th Regular meeting of the Senate recently.
The meeting was chaired by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Shedrack Gaya Best. Prof. Best conveyed a request for the change as a result of some unforeseen circumstances.
During the meeting, the Senate unanimously agreed to the change in date due to the consideration of the circumstances presented by the Vice-Chancellor.
The VC also informed the Senate members that the university has begun discussions with the relevant regulatory bodies, including the National Universities Commission, for the planned conduct of a resource verification visit.
Prof. Best also provided an update on the ongoing admission process and expressed concerns regarding a recently initiated strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which could disrupt the academic calendar, including the planned matriculation ceremony in November 2025.
