Friesland Campina WAMCO Nigeria PLC has intensified efforts to combat malnutrition in Nigeria with a sensitization programme for nurses at Bingham University Teaching Hospital, BHUTH, Jos, focusing on the importance of nutrition in patient care and health outcomes.
The event brought together nurses and healthcare professionals to strengthen nutrition education at the family and community levels, with special attention to children and adolescents who remain the most vulnerable group.
Addressing participants, Area Medical Manager, Friesland Campina WAMCO Nigeria PLC, Mrs. Onuba Ogechukwu Grace, said malnutrition remains a major global health concern.
She stated that nurses have a critical role in educating patients and relatives on proper nutrition.
According to her, nourishing Nigeria begins with proper nutrition, hence the need for increased awareness and practical interventions at both family and community levels.

Quoting global nutritional data, Mrs. Onuba posited that millions of children globally continue to suffer from malnutrition, making it imperative for healthcare professionals to intensify advocacy and education efforts.
The Regional Manager of Friesland Campina WAMCO Nigeria PLC commended Bingham University Teaching Hospital (BHUTH) for its commitment to quality patient care and nutritional support.
She expressed the company’s readiness to strengthen partnerships with healthcare professionals to advance a healthier and better-nourished Nigeria.
In a presentation on nutrition interventions, Nurse Ndueze emphasized that nutrition must be prioritized in healthcare delivery.
Ndueze said available nutrition data from Plateau State indicates that about 4.8 percent of children in the state are affected by wasting, a severe form of acute malnutrition.
She described the “first 1,000 days of life” from conception to a child’s second birthday.
Ndueze added that adequate nutrition during this window determines long-term health, cognitive development and productivity.

While urging nurses to educate patients and caregivers on maximizing locally accessible foods for balanced nutrition, Ndueze said, “Meals containing the right proportions of essential nutrients contribute significantly to healthy growth, development and overall wellbeing.”
In her remarks, Assistant Director, Nursing Services, BHUTH, Mrs. Justina Yohanna, appreciated FrieslandCampina WAMCO for the sensitization and advocated for sustained collaboration in fighting malnutrition among children and adults.
She advised nurses to remain faithful to holistic patient care by educating patients on healthy dietary practices and monitoring nutritional intake as part of routine healthcare.
“Nutrition remains a cornerstone of health, and together, we can build a healthier future for every child, family and community,” she stated.
The sensitization reinforced the vital role nurses play in promoting nutrition, preventing malnutrition, and improving health outcomes across communities.
