Mutfwang Seeks Stronger Ties with Immigration Service to Curb Illegal Migration, Boost Security in Plateau

Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has pledged stronger collaboration with the Nigerian Immigration Service, NIS, to improve border management, intelligence gathering, and overall security in the state.

Governor Mutfwang made the pledge on Thursday when he received the Plateau State Command Comptroller of the Nigerian Immigration Service, CIS Mary U. Abang, at the New Government House, Little Rayfield, Jos.

Describing the NIS as a critical institution for protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty, the Governor said effective migration management has become key to addressing emerging security threats, transnational crimes, and safeguarding public safety in Plateau.

He assured that his administration will continue to work closely with the Service to identify, monitor, and prevent illegal activities involving undocumented foreign nationals, while ensuring that lawful migrants are properly documented in line with immigration laws.

“It is the responsibility of government, through the appropriate agencies, to protect the sovereignty of Nigeria and guarantee the security of lives and property.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Plateau State, I pledge our unwavering collaboration and support to enhance the effectiveness of the Nigerian Immigration Service in the discharge of its constitutional mandate,” the Governor said.

Gov. Mutfwang stressed the need for improved intelligence sharing between the state government and immigration officers, especially at the local government level.

He charged officers deployed across Plateau’s 17 LGAs to remain vigilant, strengthen surveillance, and work with other security agencies to curb irregular migration and other security threats.

The Governor also assured the Comptroller of his administration’s commitment to improving the operational environment of the command to enable officers to perform effectively.

In her remarks, CIS Mary Abang commended Governor Mutfwang for his commitment to security, saying his policies have consistently strengthened the operations of security agencies in the state.

She disclosed that the command has stepped up migration enforcement through profiling, arrest, and repatriation of illegal foreign nationals, while expanding surveillance and intelligence-led operations across the state.

The NIS Comptroller, however, appealed for support in providing a permanent command headquarters, operational vehicles, and motorcycles to aid patrols, particularly in remote communities and mining sites where undocumented foreigners are often found.

“We appeal for logistics, particularly motorcycles, to enable our officers to access remote mining areas. We have discovered instances where some foreign nationals, including Chinese nationals, entered the state with temporary work permits valid for only 30 days but remained illegally for over a year after their permits had expired,” she stated.
