PLSG Condemns Killing of UNIJOS Graduate, Vows Justice for Perpetrators of Jungle Justice

The Plateau State Government has condemned the mob killing of Mr. Ibrahim Pilasar Mbaya, a graduate of the University of Jos, and vowed that all those involved will be prosecuted.
Mbaye was reportedly beaten to death in Jos on Sunday, July 27, 2026, following allegations of theft linked to a missing mobile phone. The incident occurred off the university campus.
In a statement signed on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, the government described the act as “barbaric” and said jungle justice has no place in a civilized and law-abiding society.
“While investigations are ongoing to ascertain the full facts surrounding the incident, it is deeply disturbing that a young life was cut short on the basis of an unverified accusation,” the statement read.
The government expressed confidence in the ongoing investigation by the Nigeria Police Force and urged security agencies to ensure a thorough, impartial, and expeditious probe.
“Every individual found to have participated in, facilitated, or aided this heinous crime must be identified and brought to justice in accordance with the law,” it stated.
It also called on residents to reject mob action and to hand suspected offenders over to law enforcement authorities.
“No grievance, suspicion, or allegation justifies the unlawful taking of human life,” the government added.
The Plateau State Government extended condolences to the family of the deceased, the management, staff, and students of the University of Jos, and the government and people of Borno State.
“We pray that Almighty God grants them the strength, comfort, and fortitude to bear this tragedy,” the statement said.
The Gov. Mutfwang administration reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights and dignity of every citizen.
Residents were urged to “remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding” and to allow security agencies to carry out their duties without interference.
Meanwhile, the management of the University of Jos said it received the news “with deep shock and sadness.”
In a separate statement signed by Emmanuel Madugu, Deputy Registrar, Information and Public Relations, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tanko Ishaya, extended condolences to Mbaye’s family, his course mates, and the entire Management urged calm and assured the university community that relevant authorities were handling the matter.
“We also call on students to remain peaceful and law-abiding while investigations are ongoing,” the statement said.
The university prayed for comfort for the bereaved family and the entire university community during “these difficult times.”
The death of the 2025/2026 graduate comes amid public outcry over cases of mob action in Jos.
As of the time of filing this report, the police had made more arrests in connection with the incident.
