6 Killed, 1 Injured in Attacks on Plateau Communities, Berom Youth Group Alleges

Six people were killed and one woman critically injured in three separate attacks on Berom communities in Plateau State between Saturday, July 4 and Sunday, July 5, 2026, the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM) has alleged.
In a press statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Rwang Tengwong, BYM blamed “Armed Fulani Terrorists” for the attacks in Riyom and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas, describing them as part of a “sustained campaign of terror against peaceful Plateau Christian communities.”
BYM said the first attack occurred at about 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, 2026, in Rinyan Village, Ta-Hoss Community, Riyom LGA.
According to the group, attackers operating from the Fulani settlement in the Bangai axis opened fire on farmers, killing Mrs. Hudung Luka, 40, and critically injuring Mrs. Ladi Istifanus, 50.
Later that night, the statement added that gunmen invaded Sabon Layi community in Barkin Ladi LGA and killed three men.
In the early hours of Sunday, July 5, BYM said another attack in Kwi Village, Riyom LGA, left Mr. Peter Bulus dead.
The group said the attacks are “not isolated incidents” but part of a “persistent pattern of violence deliberately targeting innocent civilians, farmers, and rural communities.”
It added that the killings have continued to “instil fear, displace families, and threaten the livelihoods of the Berom people.”
Citing “recent security intelligence reports,” BYM alleged that armed attackers are “camped in different locations across Plateau State” with plans to launch further coordinated attacks on vulnerable communities.
BYM called on the Federal Government, Plateau State Government, the military, police, Department of State Services, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to “immediately identify, arrest, and prosecute the perpetrators and their sponsors.”
The group also demanded “immediate, intelligence-driven security operations to identify, dismantle, and neutralize” alleged camps, as well as “intensified surveillance of identified flashpoints” to prevent further attacks.
“Security agencies must act proactively rather than waiting to respond after attacks have occurred,” the statement said.
“The continuous massacre of innocent people must not be allowed to continue with impunity.”
BYM said the Berom people have “an inalienable right to live peacefully on their ancestral land” and urged government to demonstrate the “political will to end these recurring attacks.”
The association extended condolences to bereaved families and prayed for the recovery of the injured victim.
Riyom and Barkin Ladi LGAs have witnessed repeated attacks over the years leading to deaths, displacement and destruction of property.
As at press time, security agencies in Plateau State had not issued an official statement on the July 4–5 incidents.
