Gov. Mutfwang Approves 50kg Fertilizer at N20,000 for Plateau Farmers, Orders Immediate Sale

Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has approved a major fertilizer subsidy for Plateau farmers, lowering the price of a 50-kilogram bag to ₦20,000 from the current market rate of between ₦50,000 and ₦53,000, ahead of the 2026 farming season.
The Governor also approved the procurement of approximately 500 truckloads of fertilizer for distribution across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state, with sales directed to commence immediately.
In a statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Affairs, Dr. Gyang Bere, Governor Mutfwang said the intervention is part of his administration’s commitment to agricultural transformation, food security, and the economic empowerment of farmers.
“To ensure that farmers have timely access to quality farming inputs at affordable prices, Governor Mutfwang has further approved a substantial subsidy on the fertilizers,” the statement said.
The Governor explained that the subsidy is a direct response to concerns raised by farmers over the rising cost of farm inputs and is designed to reduce the high cost of agricultural production, enhance productivity, and strengthen food security across Plateau.
According to the statement, the Plateau State Government has procured about 500 truckloads of fertilizer for distribution to farmers statewide.
While the official flag-off of the 2026 Fertilizer Subsidy Programme is scheduled for Friday, July 10, 2026, Governor Mutfwang has directed that the sale of the subsidized fertilizers begin immediately “to enable farmers to access the inputs without delay as the planting season gathers momentum.”
Governor Mutfwang said agriculture remains “a major pillar of his administration’s development agenda and a critical driver of economic growth, employment, and rural development.”
He noted that the intervention aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and complements federal efforts to cushion economic hardship and increase food production nationwide.
The Governor expressed confidence that the initiative will “significantly reduce production costs, improve crop yields, increase farmers’ profit margins, and contribute meaningfully to the state’s drive towards achieving food sufficiency and sustainable agricultural development.”
He called on farmers to “take full advantage of the subsidy programme” and assured them of his administration’s continued commitment to policies that support agricultural productivity and position Plateau as “Nigeria’s leading hub for agriculture and agribusiness.”
