The ECWA leadership has tasked government at all levels to “move beyond lamentation,” to be decisive and coordinated in tackling insecurity in the country.
Acknowledging governments’ previous concerns, the Church leaders expressed worry about the recent killings and kidnappings of citizens and urged the authorities to intensify efforts towards safeguarding the lives and property of the citizens.
In a 16-point communique issued at the end of its 73rd General Church Council meeting in Jos, the ECWA leaders decried the continuous loss of lives and destruction of property of its members across the country.
Describing the situation as “tragic and unacceptable,” the Council attributed the escalating security challenges confronting Nigerians, particularly vulnerable communities, to the “apparent inadequacy of effective government protection.”
In the communique signed by the ECWA President, Rev Dr. Job Bagat, and the ECWA General Secretary, Rev. Ayuba Asheshe, the Council advised members to “strengthen community-based vigilance, cooperation, and mutual support” so as to build resilience and improve collective security in their domains.
Addressing the state of national road infrastructure across the country, the Council acknowledged the government’s efforts towards advancing infrastructural development but expressed worry over the deteriorating condition of the roads.
They added that the state of the poor state of the roads continues to pose “significant risks to lives and property.”
The communique said, “In the light of this, Council calls on the Government to accord urgent priority to the comprehensive rehabilitation and sustained maintenance of critical road infrastructure nationwide.
“Such interventions should be deliberate, transparent, and consistently implemented to ensure durability, public safety, and measurable impact on the nation’s socio-economic development.”
Recognizing the critical role of credible leadership in shaping the country’s future, the Council called on all eligible members to ensure that they are “duly registered and to participate actively in the electoral process at all levels.”
While also calling on members “who are called, gifted and positioned” for involvement in partisan politics to “engage responsibly,” the Council noted that the absence of “principled and value-driven” individuals within the political space often creates room for poor governance and leadership deficits.
While urging electoral umpire institutions to discharge their duties with the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and fairness to strengthen public confidence in the electoral process and its outcomes, the Council urged members to remain prayerful, discerning, and trusting that God will guide the nation towards righteous leadership and sustainable development.
