Advocates Church Unity, Citizen Vigilance and Economic Empowerment to Secure Plateau’s Future

Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has called on Christians in the state to deepen unity, embrace vigilance in security, and engage in economic empowerment as key strategies to tackle insecurity, poverty, and other challenges confronting the state.
The Governor made the call on Sunday while addressing worshippers at a church service at ECWA Goodnews Church in Bukuru, Jos South Local Government Area.
Governor Mutfwang said his administration has made it a tradition to worship with different Christian denominations across the state to foster unity and reinforce the Church’s role in peacebuilding.
“One of the assignments God has given us is to unite the Church of Jesus Christ… When the Church stands together, it becomes a stronger force for righteousness, peace and development,” he said.
He noted that inclusiveness is reflected in the Government House Chapel, where ministers are drawn from all denominations.
The Chairman of Bukuru DCC, Rev. Ezra Anthony, thanked the Governor for the visit and commended his administration’s commitment to peace and development, while also raising concern over persistent attacks in Jos South LGA.
Speaking on insecurity, the Governor described it as “a deliberate strategy by criminal elements to impoverish communities, displace families and undermine economic prosperity.”
He urged citizens to see security as a shared responsibility and to provide timely intelligence to security agencies.
“Security personnel are not magicians; they act on credible intelligence. When you see something, say something. The information you provide may save lives,” he said.
Mutfwang disclosed that several planned attacks had recently been foiled through intelligence provided by citizens, and assured that the government, in collaboration with security agencies, remains committed to dismantling criminal networks.
He also commended Christian and Muslim leaders for dialogue and peaceful coexistence.
The Governor identified poverty as a major threat to peace and said his administration is investing in modern agriculture, greenhouse farming, youth entrepreneurship, women empowerment and skills acquisition.
Modern agriculture is no longer about the size of land you own; it is about productivity, innovation and technology. Plateau women remain the backbone of our economy,” he said.
He added that widows, vulnerable women and young mothers are benefiting from vocational training programmes to improve household incomes.
The state is also intensifying efforts through the Gender Equality Commission and Ministry of Women Affairs to combat girl-child trafficking and illegal baby factories.
He disclosed that several trafficked girls had recently been rescued from neighbouring West African countries.
On mining, Mutfwang said government is working to regulate activities to eliminate illegal mining, improve earnings, and discourage school dropouts. He also revealed plans for sustainable school feeding programmes in public primary and boarding schools to boost enrolment.
The Governor reaffirmed commitment to critical infrastructure including roads, street lighting and water supply.
In a gesture of support, he announced a financial donation for struggling young mothers and widows in the church, and pledged to provide a solar power system for ECWA Goodnews Bukuru instead of a generator.
Plateau remains “home for all who desire peace,” Mutfwang said, urging residents to respect host community customs and values.
Delivering a sermon from Luke 13:22-30 on the theme, “Strive to Enter His Kingdom,” the Senior Pastor of ECWA Goodnews Church, Bukuru, Rev. Mislum Ishaya, urged Christians to embrace genuine repentance, holy living and unwavering commitment to Jesus Christ as the only pathway to eternal life.
He cautioned believers against relying solely on religious activities without personal transformation, stressing that entrance into God’s Kingdom requires sincere faith, obedience and a life that reflects the character of Christ.
Earlier, the Chairman of ECWA Bukuru District Church Council (DCC), Rev. Ezra Anthony, thanked the governor for worshipping with the congregation and commended his administration’s commitment to the welfare, peace and development of Plateau State.
He also expressed concern over the persistent attacks on communities in Jos South Local Government Area, lamenting the loss of lives, destruction of livelihoods and growing insecurity affecting residents.
Rev. Anthony commended security agencies, particularly the Department of State Services (DSS), for their sacrifices in safeguarding lives and maintaining stability across the state.
The service featured special prayers for Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, the State Government, lasting peace, security and prosperity of the state.
