Kumm University, KKU, Vom, has announced plans to establish Faculties of Law and Medicine to expand its academic programmes.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Yakubu Jabil, disclosed this when he hosted a delegation from the Lightbearer Newspaper led by its Editor, Mrs. Elizabeth Salami, on a courtesy visit to the institution.

Prof. Jabil said the proposed faculties would complement the existing Faculties of Arts, Management and Social Sciences, and Science and Computing, which currently run 14 academic programmes.

He said the expansion was aimed at meeting the educational needs of the present generation and providing opportunities for students to pursue professional courses, noting that it would depend on resource mobilization and collaboration with the proprietor, the Church of Christ in Nations, COCIN, and other partners.

He commended Lightbearer Newspaper for its role in promoting public awareness, saying both organizations shared a responsibility to contribute to society through education, information and youth development.

Earlier, Mrs. Salami congratulated Prof. Jabil on his appointment and prayed for wisdom and success in his tenure.

She thanked the university management for accepting the newspaper’s retainership proposal and assured of its readiness to provide coverage of the university’s activities across its print and online platforms.

Salami, who said the newspaper reports issues from a Christian perspective with social, political, economic and spiritual implications, expressed interest in the proposed Department of Mass Communication, urging that its curriculum reflect contemporary media trends and equip students with practical skills.

She disclosed that the newspaper had provided practical training for students from Plateau State University and other institutions and expressed willingness to extend similar opportunities to KKU students when the department becomes operational.

She also called for more attention to industrial training, workshops and other capacity-building initiatives to improve students’ readiness for the job market.

In his remarks, the Registrar of the University, Dr. Benjamin Dachomo, thanked the Lightbearer team for the visit and urged the newspaper to help project the institution’s activities and achievements to a wider audience.
